Well, I survived my first Grad party!  I think it was a success, good food, lots of people and family.  Here is Ryan and two of his cousins, Beth and Anna.

 I had to get some pictures of the drink table!  Behind the containers of drinks were fruit for adding to your "drink".  Strawberries, mangos, kiwi and lemons...

 I made lots of tissue paper flowers for the tables and since I was serving a Mexican meal I decided to go colorful with the decorations to make it more fiesta-ish.

 The best part was the dessert table......yum!  They were all filled with different flavors or cream :)

Only 16 years until I plan my last graduation party :)

 The day started with kindergarten graduation....Sophia looked so sweet!

And to add to our busy week, a few days before was Honors Convocation.  You get honored at a assembly if you have a 3.5 grade point.  It is very nice but oh-so LOOONG...  I am so proud of my girls :)

Thursday is the actual Graduation.  Then in 3 weeks we head to Lansing for his Coast Guard physical...not sure how I'm going to handle all of this.

My baby is 18

My oldest turned 18 on the 12th.  I know I'm a bit late with this  post but I've been preparing for his High School Graduation party that is Friday.  I can't believe that he is that old!  He has enlisted with the Coast Guard which we are happy about.  He can see a bit of our country and hopefully will come back close to his Mom when he decides to have a family :)  Sorry the pictures are so little they were scanned and I'm not sure how to enlarge them...

Ryan, we are proud of you and love you tons.  I'm so happy you are my son.

Shirt tutorial updates...

Here is the shirt version...

I only had 15 " for the collar and it worked perfect for a 5 year old.

I love the way it looks with a shirred waist.  The only other thing I would like to add is a mustard colored flower on the collar :)

For the dress I made, I decided it needed something, so I cut off the arms which  were the only things left from the scraps.

 

I decided on pockets because that girl loves to pick rocks.  I shirred the top with 3 rows of shirring.

 

Folded the sides over 1/2" and pinned the pockets on the sides of the dress, centered over the side seams...

 

They are hard to see, but they look cute!  All saggy and baggy....love it!

I'm hoping someone tries this, it's sooo easy :)

Smocked collar summer dress tutorial :)

Here is my first tutorial...I probably should have put a picture of the finished product first.  Rookie :)

I found a knit shirt at the

local thrift store that had a print I liked.  Sometimes that is the biggest battle.

I layed the shirt out and took one of Sophia's existing dresses and layed that on top for a guide.  Using the original hem of the shirt for the bottom of the dress.  I know, that's cheating.  I'm like that :)

I folded the collar of the dress down and the arms of the dress in to create the outline of the dress.  I used my rotary cutter and cut around the dress adding about a inch.  If you don't have a rotary cutter, used scissors.  I don't bother to pin generally.

This is what the body of the dress looks like.  The back of the dress is underneath...I'm sure you figured that out.

Next, I layed the pattern dress back on top so I could mark the arm holes.  They were 5 inches from the top of the dress. 

I stitched from the pin down on my serger (both sides), if you don't have a serger just use a zig zag stitch on your machine.  Straight stitch behind the zig zag for durability.

Without ironing I folded the arm holes in 1/4 inch and used a zig zag stitch to close the holes.  You don't have to, knit will not fray but if you are using cotton you need to.

Next is the collar.  Because I didn't have a bunch of fabric to spare I cut four pieces that were about 3 1/2 by 19.  If I were to do this again I would only make them 17 inches.  Sophia is a size 5/6 and her sist

 er Maija is 8, I think 19 inches would work perfectly for my 8 year old. 

 Anyway, I cut 4 pieces 3 1/2 by 19 inches long.  The picture above shows 2 stitched together (right sides together) and laying face down.   The other 2 are stacked on top of each other...

After stitching the second 2 together, I sewed all 4 pieces together to form a circle.  So now you have a formed collar with the bottom of the collar open.  Good-we are ready to iron the collar and attach it to the dress.  Fold the collar so the right sides are facing outward and iron.

Next it's time to pin the collar on.  With your seams of the collar on the sides, eyeball the center of the from and pin it to the dress.  I pinned mine down a bit so I formed a bit of a roundness.  On the outer corners, I made sure I was about a inch overlapped.  Then I pinned the back, basically straight on so I could tell the difference from the front and back.

I brought it to my machine and close to the edge I stitched the collar to the dress.  I continued all of the way around the collar so the edge will be closed.

Next, using elastic thread in my bobbin (there are great tutorials out there for sewing with elastic thread, just google it and you will find some) I started to sew 1 inch from the top of my collar.  This will form a cute little ruffle at the top of the dress collar.  Then, every 1/4 down until my last stitch which is directly over the top of the stitch I used to attach the collar to the dress.  When you are done, you steam the thread for 2-3 seconds to get it to gather more.

 I trimmed strings and some of the knit that was showing, like in the picture above.

This was a quick and easy project.  Sophie was already in the mud within a hour of wearing this :)

 It would also be cute as a blouse, with a shirred waistline!  I can't wait to make another!

Easter Break :)

Wow- Has Easter flown by!  We were so busy....

Our weather is so strange!  Friday was BEAUTIFUL and Saturday we woke up to 3 inches of snow on the ground :(  It melted lots on Saturday but then SUNDAY WAS 60+ degrees :)  What a gorgeous Easter....we celebrated with a Easter brunch at our house.  Waffles, breakfast pizza, egg bakes, rolls and french toast bake.  YUM!  The kids had a great time playing outside....it was truly a enjoyable day.

Chad and I were so busy over the weekend with "projects".  We remodeled the living room last winter and built in a media cabinet.  We never did trim it off, so we pulled everything out, arranged it in a better way, added bead board to the inside, painted it white and put everything back in.  We now need to buy the trim we want and cabinet doors.  It looks better already :)

This weekend I sewed, painted, crafted, built and cleaned.  Not to mention laundry...that never goes away!

 The wooden bowl I bought over the winter with intentions of spray painting it...finally done :)

 I built these photo ledges with the plans from Ana White's site....love her plans.  I've built a bench off there too....there are a few other plans I am going to attempt.  I just put the pictures on it, they need to be "arranged", some taken down and others added.  It fills up the wall nicely.

 I've been buying these foam wreaths and hanging them in my sewing room, it was time to go to work.  There are lots of tutorials out there for yarn wreaths.  I love the colors ;)

 I made myself something and actually wore it.  One other time I made a dress in High School, although my sister would argue that and say she made it.  I gave it to my bff, my sister wasn't happy.  She thought she should have gotten it.  I have to say, I love my skirt, will make more and actually wore it in public!  I bought the pattern from the site Make it and love it.  I paid $5.00 and it was well worth it.  I got to try my hand at shirring, it was fun and easy!

Mom figures I'm getting old enough to sport a tattoo now,

 

so when she spotted one the girls left lying around the house she figured this was the time (thus the     pink/red heart).

                                                         After all, I am nearly 2 1/2....

                I am not too sure about this thing and keep trying to pull it off but it isn't coming off!

                                                    Oh well, back to Umi Zoomi :)

Daddy is NOT a fan of tattoo's but must have thought his boy looked cute because when I came home Saturday after a Girl Scout even this little guy was sporting a sleeveless shirt!  I'm not sure what kind of bonding went on while I was gone but this  "Momma's Boy" is now his Daddy's BFF???

That will teach me to leave these boys alone :)
